You know what is exhausting? Pretending not to like foods that you actually love.

In middle and high school, I read all of these magazine articles revealing the “5 foods never to eat!” or the “top foods for a flat belly!” Assuming that I needed to follow their recommendations if I wanted to be happy and healthy, I set out to eliminate all of these “bad” (ugh) foods from my life.

Thankfully, I now realize that that is what you call DIETING and it is extremely unhealthy, both physically and emotionally. Instead of eliminating our favorite foods, what if we incorporated them in a satisfying way? What if we trusted our body’s cravings instead of second-guessing every morsel that passes our lips?

As I mentioned in this post, satisfaction is a huge factor to consider when making food choices. I love this quote from the Intuitive Eating book:

“In our fury to be thin and healthy, we often overlook one of the most basic gifts of existence- the pleasure and satisfaction that can be found in the eating experience.”

In the beginning stages of my intuitive eating journey, I really had to dig deep to allow myself to enjoy foods that I loved but that diet culture did not approve of, such as bread, sandwiches, ice cream, pizza, and cereal. Although it was challenging, pushing through that anxiety to find the freedom waiting for me on the other side was so worth it.

So, what are some of your favorite foods? Identify them and OWN IT. Ignore the lying voices of diet mentality that tell you you’re “bad” for eating xyz food. Now go take your liberated little self to the grocery store (or restaurant, coffee shop, ice cream parlor, etc.), buy that favorite food, and enjoy every bite!

  1. I love that quote from Intuitive Eating and I can relate so much to this! Some foods I love and am trying to embrace freedom with are chips (especially sweet potato!), ice cream, and burgers.

  2. love this!! diet culture pushes us away from our favorite foods, but there is no shame in saying that I love ice cream and I love a big plate of sweet potato fries with ketchup- life’s too short to not allow ourselves the freedom of enjoying these foods!
