January favorites

At times, January has felt like an enveloping darkness. Other times it’s felt like a fresh, bright new beginning. Often it has felt, paradoxically, somewhere in between.

There’s a poet I love named Drew Jackson who puts it this way:

“Not all darkness
is the darkness of despair.
This may be the darkness of the womb
that is consuming you,
inviting you to wait there
for the fullness of time.”

Umm isn’t that beautiful?! I love it so much.

That being said, I have been doing my best to fight for joy this month. Here are a few things bringing pinpricks of light to our little corner of the world:

This pumpkin bread that was super easy to make AND my kids loved it! Although full disclosure, the first time I put it on their plates Kyeler looked at it skeptically and said, “That poop?” Why my child thinks I would feed him poop, I have no idea.

-Josh was off on MLK Day and we went to the Qubein Children’s Museum in High Point. It was probably the nicest kids’ museum I’ve ever been to! Also, the look on CJ’s face in this photo makes me laugh. Later when we asked him what his favorite part of the museum was, he said the carousel. Go figure.

-Weekly yoga classes at the Robinhood Y. All I can say is… thank you Lord for gym childcare.

-The Magnatiles obsession is going strong over here. This is the first thing I’ve found that really keeps the boys occupied indoors. Kyeler especially will focus foreverrr on building something and it’s so fun to watch!

-The boys have been loving this book called The Very Hungry Caterpillar Eats Breakfast and got it in their heads that they wanted to try a croissant, like the Very Hungry Caterpillar does. Recently I took them to Bobby Boy Bakeshop for a croissant and even though they weren’t huge fans (how?), it was still a fun outing.

-Meeting up at Q’s Corner on a cold, rainy afternoon with my best friend and her son. I loveeee this place and it was so fun to catch up with my friend while our boys played.

-CJ in a spacesuit. I mean!

-Homemade hot chocolate. I have been drinking this almost every morning instead of coffee! Basically I just heat up a mug of almond milk and then use a handheld frother (do I sound like a millennial yet) to mix in honey and cacao powder. It is insanely delicious and so comforting.

-I’ve been reading a lot lately but the best thing I read in January was the final Harry Potter book! Ahhhh! The search for horcruxes, the legend of the deathly hallows, Harry’s final defeat of Voldemort… I could read this series over and over again until the end of time and never get sick of it. In fact, I might l do just that.

Happy (almost) February, loves! ❤
